Translation The sages, with faith, delivered the transcendental abode of Mathurā, which is full of effulgence, wherein the threefold creation is unreal, and sometimes sweet narrations are heard.

Synonyms munayaḥ—the sages; saṁśitāḥ—determined; sarve—all; bhagavati—unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead; arpita—dedicated; mānasaḥ—minds; kathām—narrations; bhagavataḥ—of the Lord; kṛtsnām—complete; kṣaṇam—even for a moment; eva—certainly; na—not; tyajanti—give up.

Translation All the sages, with determined minds dedicated to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, never give up the complete narrations of the Lord even for a moment.

Synonyms saḥ—that; vai—certainly; puṁsām—for mankind; paraḥ—supreme; dharmaḥ—occupation; yataḥ—by which; bhaktiḥ—devotional service; adhokṣaje—unto the Transcendence; ahaitukī—causeless; apratihatā—uninterrupted; yayā—by which; ātmā—the self; su-prasīdati—fully satisfied.

Translation The supreme occupation [dharma] for all humanity is that by which men can attain to unalloyed devotional service unto the transcendent Lord. Such devotional service must be causeless and uninterrupted to completely satisfy the self.

Synonyms vāsudeve—unto Kṛṣṇa; bhagavati—the Personality of Godhead; bhakti-yogaḥ—devotional service; prayojitaḥ—applied; janayati—develops; āśu—very soon; vairāgyam—detachment; jñānam—knowledge; ca—and; yat—that which; ahaitukam—causeless.

Translation By rendering devotional service unto the Personality of Godhead, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, one immediately develops causeless knowledge and detachment from the world.

Synonyms dharmaḥ—religion; satya—truth; dayā—mercy; upetaḥ—endowed with; vidyā—knowledge; vā—or; tattva-darśinī—revealing the truth; madhuraḥ—sweet; kṣāntimān—tolerant; jñānam—knowledge; bhakti-yogena—by devotional service; labhyate—is achieved.

Translation Religion endowed with truth and mercy, or knowledge which reveals the truth, becomes sweet and tolerant when attained through devotional service.

Synonyms dharmasya—of religion; hi—certainly; āpavargyasya—leading to liberation; na—not; arthaḥ—economic development; arthāya—for economic development; upakalpate—is meant; na—not; arthasya—of economic development; dharma-ekāntasya—whose only purpose is religion; kāmaḥ—sense gratification; lābhāya—for achievement; hi—certainly; smṛtaḥ—is so considered.

Translation All occupational engagements are certainly meant for ultimate liberation. They should never be performed with a view to sense gratification. And even economic development, when it is for the purpose of religion, is never meant for sense gratification.

Translation Life’s desires should never be directed toward sense gratification. One should desire only a healthy life, or self-preservation, since a human being is meant for inquiry about the Absolute Truth. Nothing else should be the goal of one’s activities.

Synonyms bhakti-yogaḥ—devotional service; parīkṣitaḥ—practiced; puruṣaḥ—the living entity; prakṛteḥ—of material nature; paraḥ—transcendental; pratyakṣaḥ—direct perception; sarva-bhūtānām—of all living beings; tat—that; vijñānam—scientific knowledge; vimucyate—becomes liberated.

Translation The living entity is transcendental to material nature when he engages in devotional service. By such service one can directly perceive the Supreme Truth, and thus he becomes liberated.

Translation Although many times the narrations of the Lord have been heard by many, still devotional service to Lord Kṛṣṇa develops by hearing again and again.

Translation Therefore, O best amongst the twice-born, everyone has to fulfill the prescribed duties, according to the system of four divisions of social and spiritual orders, and only then can one expect to achieve the ultimate goal of life, namely devotional service to the Supreme Lord.

Translation Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the Personality of Godhead, who is the Paramātmā (Supersoul) in everyone’s heart and the benefactor of the truthful devotee, cleanses desire for material enjoyment from the heart of the devotee who has developed the urge to hear His messages, which are in themselves virtuous when properly heard and chanted.

Translation By regular attendance in classes on the Bhāgavatam and by rendering of service to the pure devotee, all that is troublesome to the heart is almost completely destroyed, and loving service unto the Personality of Godhead, who is praised with transcendental songs, is established as an irrevocable fact.

Translation As soon as irrevocable loving service is established in the heart, the effects of nature’s modes of passion and ignorance, such as lust, desire and hankering, disappear from the heart. Then the devotee is established in goodness, and he becomes completely happy.

Translation The ultimate good for all living entities in this world is to fix the mind intensely on Me by means of devotional service.

Translation As the mind becomes purified by hearing and chanting the glories of the Lord, the subtle truth becomes visible to the eyes of the soul, just as the eye sees clearly when treated with medicinal ointment.
